Ans:_ Fowler was a young writer of detective stories .
He came to meet Ausable in order to get some experiences about the life of a spy so that he might cover him up in his next story .
Fowler met Ausable in a musty corridor of a gloomy French hotel where Ausable had a room. In contrast to the expected thrill, Fowler had spent a dull evening with Ausable. Ausable took him to his room on the sixth floor. As they reached the room, Ausable closed the door and switched on the light. As the light came on, Fowler had his first authentic thrill of the day, because there was a man standing halfway across the room, with an automatic pistol in his hand. The man was none but Max, Ausable's rival secret agent.
